Project #2 (Remediate) Research & Project Proposal

Research:

Remediate is a very intimating task of a project for myself as I usually do not draw things like buildings and spaces that will be labeled or organized in this fashion. So going into the research, i am looking for some understanding as well as maybe some methods for organization.

Below are my 3 articles for the project.

Amy Youngs, River Construct: This article was very interesting as my eyes first saw the work for what is was which is a bunch of things inside of a small metal fence. Then behind that is what Youngs calls a "artificial river I have constructed flows vertically, up and down a utility ladder, feeding and watering lettuces and herbs in a succession of buckets resting on the rungs." The two areas feed off each other as the fenced area houses a bunny who is used for the waste it makes to be given worms. The worms then break it down to liquid fertilizer which is neat due to not knowing they did that.

To keep it short and sweet, it is neat to see such a small amount of area make so much out of a different way of organizing things to take up just that space.

Joe Scanlan – Pay Dirt

Honestly there was not much on this file, but personally thought it was neat about everything that made up the dirt in the project. "Coffee grounds, sawdust, gypsum, egg shells, bone meal, blood meal, Epsom salt".

Ultimately 100 words can not be made from this, but the idea of what could go into dirt and soil for potential plants as well as the ground. This shows certain things that could help out nature.

Xavier Cortada – Reclamation Project:

This article somewhat had the message the professor had, but instead of taking back land from the school for the class, this was taking an area for nature itself. The project is made to try and regrow certain areas and make it more that what it was before. One example is from the mangroves that the group collected and exhibited in clear, water filled cups that they are grown in as well as taken care of in them.

Discussion:

Through all of these articles, area and location was a big factor in all of these pieces. Which personally, I believe that is important as for the project, we are designing a space initially by the art building. They are really give some big importance to the project as one should know why their doing something as well as the cause and effect of their actions. Mainly knowing if the think they plant will live where they put it, but they live and die from season to season.

Project Proposal

For this project, my primary idea will be to design for both sides of the building. Splitting the canvas into 2 landscape sections and making simple shapes to define the area's that I will be designing for. After that, I want to use squares as well as circles. The squares would be for wild flowers that will cover the entire area the number is in. The circles will be for specific items that are meant to be solo and not a conglomerate. 12 to 15 items should be enough to cover both of the area's, but keeping a space open in the bottom area for people to hangout or relax. Though having it surrounded by enough vegetation or growth from surrounding space to make it feel kinda fenced and peaceful.

So in bullet points:

*get pictures

*simplify the pictures to basic shapes

*have and excel spread sheet that has the plants and info on them

*apply it to the picture

*turn it in.
